1960 Franklin Half PCGS PR66 "DOILY" SOLD
1960 Franklin Half PCGS PR66 DOILY
Here is a 1960 Proof Franklin Half Dollar which has been graded PR66 by PCGS and is housed in one of the very rare Doily label PCGS holders. This version of the PCGS holder was only used for a couple of weeks during late-1989 before it was quickly phased out. Accordingly, it has been reported that only a few hundred coins in this style of holder are known to exist today and they are highly sought after by collectors. When you are lucky enough to find a PCGS Doily style holder, it most often contains a Morgan Silver Dollar or perhaps a Mercury Dime. Other type coins are much much more difficult to find in these holders. In the census of known examples of Doily label PCGS holders only ten (10) examples holding Proof Franklin Half Dollars are known to exist, including this coin which is the only example known of this date! The coin is an excellent coin for the grade with deep black mirrored fields and having devices exhibiting plenty of cameo contrast. Please note this coin was graded before PCGS used the cameo and deep cameo designations on proofs. The coin has some very light spotting which is noticed under a close inspection and a very light blue haze is also present. The two-piece Doily holder is in very good condition with only a couple of light cracks in the corners that do not affect the integrity of the outer stacking ring which is not broken and remains intact. A beautiful Proof Franklin Half Dollar in the ultra-rare Doily holder!
