1840-(O) Seated Liberty Half Dollar Reverse of 1838 PCGS XF45 |

The 1840 Medium Letters Seated Liberty Half Dollar is a popular Red Book variety and one of the few “mule” coins issued by the U.S. Mint. Because of the similarity of the reverse designs, this Liberty Seated Half Dollar was paired with a reverse die from the previous Capped Bust Half Dollar design. Although the coin has no mintmark, based on the reverse die, experts have attributed the coin as being struck at the New Orleans Mint. Because the Capped Bust Half Dollars had the mintmark on the obverse and the Seated Liberty Half Dollars had the mintmark on the reverse, this is a rare case where you have a coin struck in New Orleans without a mintmark. This example of the 1840-(O) Seated Liberty Half Dollar Reverse of 1838 has been graded XF45 by PCGS. The coin is a medium grey color that is fairly even, with the exception of a dark area in the reverse field near the E of UNITED. The coin has minimal wear on the high points of the design and some of the original mint luster remains. A very pleasing lightly circulated example of this very popular mule variety. |
