1909-S US-Philippines Centavo PCGS MS65RB SOLD
This coin was minted at the San Francisco Mint for use in the Philippines which were a territory of the United States at the time. Because they were minted for use in a U.S. Territory, minted at the U.S. Mint in the United States and the coins say “United States of America” on them, many U.S. collectors are now starting to collect the U.S. Philippines coinage along with their U.S. coin collections. Even the Red Book of U.S. Coins has expanded their listings of USPI coinage, see pages 411-415 of the 2014 edition (407-411 of the 2013 edition). This coin is a 1909-S U.S.-Philippines One Centavo which has been graded MS65RB by PCGS. The 1909-S One Centavo is one of the better dates in the series with a mintage of less than 2 million coins and is in high demand. It is really neat to think that this coin was minted in the same building during the same year as the major U.S. key date cents, the 1909-S Indian Cent and the 1909-S V.D.B. Lincoln Cent. The coin here is a lustrous gem example that exhibits plenty of original red color and a really attractive wood-grain toning on both sides. The obverse is free of any major marks and only a tiny spot in the denticles at the 3 o'clock position is of note. The reverse shows a few small hits in the field above the eagle but all seems appropriate for the assigned grade. An overall beautiful gem example of this popular date USPI Centavo.
