Hundreds and hundreds of medals of various compositions were produced for the World’s Columbian Exposition held in Chicago. Among the most interesting are the medals that were made of pressed wood. This 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition Machinery Hall Medal has been graded MS64 by NGC and is encapsulated in one of their large-sized holders. This medal is also cataloged as Eglit-149. This high relief medal has been made of pressed black walnut and is approximately 88mm in diameter and is in excellent condition. The piece is in virtually perfect condition with no noticeable cracks or marks and only a couple of very minor discolorations in the wood. When similar pressed wood medals appear on the market, they are almost never in this nice of condition as many will dry out and crack over the years or will become significantly discolored. Given that they are made of wood, these medals are also easily damaged. This example of this Machinery Hall pressed wood medal was very well preserved as it was discovered in it’s original paper box, which is in very poor condition and will be included. You can see the original holder as I have included photos of this medal while still in the box prior to certification. A very well preserved certified example of an interesting pressed wood medal with its original box. |
