1925 Norse Medal Thin NGC MS63 |

Although it is technically not part of the classic commemorative series, many collectors of classic commemoratives collect the 1925 Norse American Centennial Medal and include it with their collections. At the time the Norse Medal was contemplated, there was an attempt to seek production of an actual coin (most likely a half dollar) for their centennial celebration. However, getting Congress to approve the issuance of the piece as a medal and not a coin proved to be much easier. The medals are also hugely popular amongst collectors because of their eye-catching octagonal design. This example of the 1925 Norse Medal has been graded MS63 by NGC and has been struck on a thin silver planchet. The medal has decent mint-state luster, but does have several small marks in the open fields which likely account for the relatively low numerical grade. The piece has great eye appeal with its band of vibrant rainbow color around most of the obverse and a good portion of the reverse, which is much more colorful and less dark in hand than my photos show. A great example of the thin variety Norse Medal. |
