1877-S Trade Dollar NGC MS64PL SOLD
1877-S Trade Dollar NGC MS64PL
The 1877-S Trade Dollar has the highest mintage of the entire Trade Dollar series. While that would suggest that the date is relatively common, it is certainly not common once you reach the MS64 grade. Moreover, examples of the 1877-S Trade Dollar with full proof like fields are considerably more scarce. This is an amazing 1877-S Trade Dollar which has been graded MS64PL by NGC and is encapsulated in one of their newer-style edge-view holders. In looking at the NGC Population Reports, only two (2) examples of the 1877-S Trade Dollar have ever received the PL designation from NGC; this coin at MS64PL and one other coin which grades MS63PL. In fact, in the entire Trade Dollar series, this coin is one of only twenty-five (25) coins across all dates that have ever received the PL designation from NGC, none of them grading higher than MS64PL. With proof like fields, every small mark that would otherwise be relatively hidden on a normal coin seems to be exaggerated. That said, even with the proof like fields, there are relatively few marks in the fields and all are minor. It is difficult to pick out any reason or reasons why this very well struck and relatively problem free Trade Dollar was limited to its current numerical grade. Most of the “marks” seen in the fields are die polish lines which are characteristic of freshly worked dies that gave rise to the proof like appearance of this coin. While the obverse has strong proof like fields and lightly frosted devices, the reverse has even stronger proof like fields and even frostier devices. The coin is simply an amazing specimen of the Trade Dollar and quite a rare find with the PL designation by NGC.

Because of the difficulty in capturing the overall look of the coin in a single image, I have also included a short high-definition video of the coin towards the bottom of this listing in an attempt to give you a better idea of what this coin will look like in hand. Please note that you may need to adjust the video quality to 1080p and may need to increase the size of the video to full screen in order to see the coin in maximum detail.
