This 1904 Louisiana Purchase Expo Gold Quarter Dollar has been graded MS64PL by NGC and is encapsulated in the newer-style edge-view holder. This is the 10-Stars variety of the token which is cataloged as H-61-310 in the Hendershott reference on memorabilia from the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair. The very small and very thin gold token is fully proof-like on both sides with deeply mirrored fields and frosty devices. Nearly every mark on the coin which is seen in the photos is a die polish line or die crack that is completely original to the coin and I really do not see what limited the numerical grade of the piece to 64. The “Z” at the base for the fleur-de-lis obverse design is the initial of Farran Zerbe who privately minted and marketed these pieces at the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair. Zerbe, who would later serve as President of the American Numismatic Association, was also in charge of distributing the classic gold dollar commemoratives struck by the U.S. Mint in connection with the Expo. A wonderful proof-like example of the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair gold quarter dollar. |
