(1858) Lovett Atlantic Cable M-NY-493 NGC MS65BN |

This (1858) George H. Lovett Atlantic Cable merchant token has been graded MS65BN by NGC and is encapsulated in one of their newer-style edge-view holders. The token has been attributed as M-NY-493 as indicated on the NGC label. The medal celebrates the completion of the transatlantic cable with the two figures reaching out with lightning bolts connecting. This design is often called the John Bull and Brother Jonathan Medal, with those being the respective names of personifications of England (on the left) and America (on the right) which are imaged on the medal. The obverse shows hints of original luster but is relatively flat in appearance, though there are no major marks or discolorations of note. The reverse is more lustrous and even retains some original red color. An overall nice
gem example of this medal. |
