The U.S. Mint produced Official Medals for the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition (PPIE) in various metals and finishes. The design of the medal is very beautiful with the obverse showing a winged Mercury opening the locks of the Panama Canal with a boat passing though with the words “On! Sail On!” below the image. The reverse shows two female figures, which represent the Eastern and Western Hemispheres, holding hands and holding a cornucopia around the Earth while a seagull flies below. The Hibler-Kappen book on So-Called Dollars mentions that the Official Medal was produced in three metals; Silver (HK-399), Bronze (HK-400) and Gilt (HK-401). This is a bronze example of the 1915 PPIE Official Medal listed as HK-400 in the Hibler-Kappen book on So-Called Dollars which has been certified and graded MS62 by NGC. The 1915 Panama-Pacific Exposition Medals were the subject of an August 2012 article in The Numismatist which explained that there were actually four different types of bronze finishes used on the Official Medals at the PPIE. Although not individually recognized by NGC or by the Hibler-Kappen reference, the bronze medals were done in bright bronze, statuary bronze, antiqued bronze or oxidized bronze finish. In comparing this piece with other examples of the PPIE medal, I believe this piece is an example of the bright bronze finish which also sometimes referred to as lightly gilded as it is bright and almost golden in color. The bright golden color of this finish can be seen clearly in the photos, particularly in the protected areas of the design near the rims. The bright golden color has faded on much of the design, however, and the medal does show some light spotting, mostly on the obverse. An overall nice example of this popular medal. |
