1914 Panama Canal Completion Medal HK-398 NGC MS65 SOLD
1914 Panama Canal Completion Medal HK-398 NGC MS65
The creation of the Panama Canal was one of the most impressive engineering feats in history. The first ship to pass through the Panama Canal on a test transit was the Cristobal on August 3, 1914. That ship carried 50,000 consecutively numbered souvenir medals during that voyage. This 1914 Panama Canal Completion Medal was one of those medals aboard the Cristobal on that first voyage through the Panama Canal and is listed as HK-398 in the Hibler-Kappen book on So-Called Dollars and has been graded MS65 by NGC and is encapsulated in a newer-style edge-view holder. This piece is also numbered with the serial number 15065. The bronze medal features an impressive obverse design with the female figure on the bow of a ship going through the Panama Canal with her arms reaching out and touching two globes, connecting the two hemispheres. The reverse of the medal has the seal of the Panama Canal Zone, a certification of the medal and the serial number. The piece is in excellent condition, very well-struck and has only a few small marks and tiny rim bumps noticeable. A terrific gem example of the so-called dollar carried aboard the first Panama Canal trip.
