1876 U.S. Centennial Official Medal Bronze HK-21 NGC MS65BN SOLD
1876 US Centennial Official Medal Bronze HK-21 NGC MS65BN
1876 was the 100th Anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence and the formation of the United States of America. A great Centennial Exposition to celebrate the occasion was held in Philadelphia that year. The official medals of the Centennial Exposition were designed by William Barber and struck at the US Mint Exhibit on the fairgrounds in various metallic compositions. The version of the official medal offered here was struck in bronze and was originally sold for 50 cents at the fair in 1876. The Hibler-Kappen book on So-Called Dollars reports that 13,000 of the 1876 Centennial Exposition Official Medals were struck in bronze. This example of the 1876 U.S. Centennial Exposition Official Bronze Medal is listed as HK-21 in the Hibler-Kappen book on So-Called Dollars and has been graded MS65BN by NGC and is encapsulated in one of the newer-style edge-view holders. The piece is also pedigreed to the Jeff Shevlin Collection on the NGC label. The medal is a medium to dark brown chocolate color which is pretty even and consistent, but which was also difficult to photograph. Please note that the intense lighting used to image the medal unfortunately revealed many fine scratches in the plastic holder which show in the images but are not on the medal itself. The piece has very bold details and is strongly struck with a fine wire rim around the edges. I can find no issues with the medal to note as it is really an amazing specimen with no obvious faults. The piece even shows faint traces of the original red color in some of the protected areas of the design when tilted into the light. In looking at the NGC Census, this is one of only ten examples of the HK-21 which have graded MS65BN with only a single example grading higher at MS66BN. A beautiful gem example of the Centennial Medal in bronze that would be very difficult to find any nicer.
