| The Monroe Doctrine Commemorative Half Dollar has a really unique design, particularly the reverse. The obverse has the heads of James Monroe and John Quincy Adams who were the Presidents in power at the time the Monroe Doctrine was instituted. The reverse features a very interesting image of the Western Hemisphere that is portrayed by two female figures. Surprisingly, the commemorative was issued in conjunction with a major film exposition held in Los Angeles in 1923 which really had nothing to do with the centennial of the Monroe Doctrine. This example of the 1923-S Monroe Doctrine Commemorative Half Dollar has been graded MS64+ by NGC and is encapsulated in a newer-style edge-view holder. The coin has also been certified by CAC as being solid for the assigned grade. The coin has above average luster for the issue and above average toning. The obverse is mostly bright white and lustrous, but the right side has nice teal blue toning that turns to green and then gold as it approaches the rim. The reverse is lightly toned with golden color that is focused near the rims. The coin is very strong for the grade and certainly worthy of the plus designation assigned by NGC. The coin looks better than many coins that grade gem, but can still be had for a discount from the price of those gem coins. |
