The 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition was held in San Francisco, California to celebrate the opening of the Panama Canal. In addition to the coins and official medals of the Exposition which were produced by the United States Mint, many medals were made by others related to the PPIE, including medals commissioned by various States to help raise funds for their exhibits at the Exposition. This medal is the Montana Exposition Fund Dollar issued at the 1915 Panama-Pacific Expo and is listed as HK-409 in the Hibler-Kappen book on So-Called Dollars and has been graded MS65BN by NGC. This bronze medal has amazing overall detail in the design. The obverse has a Winged Victory standing on the bow of a ship with the Exposition fairground in the background. The reverse shows a stream with mountains and trees in the background and tools in the foreground. The gem specimen here is a medium brown color that has an attractive antiqued look to it, though I could not find any records of any such finishing being done to these medals so it is more likely that the look is the natural aging of the piece. No significant hits, marks or other issues are of note. Only two (2) examples of the HK-409 have been graded higher by NGC, both grading MS66BN. A beautiful gem example of this well-detailed so-called dollar from the 1915 Pan-Pac Expo. |
