The 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition was a major World’s Fair that was held in St. Louis, Missouri. As part of the World’s Fair, the 1904 Summer Olympics were also held in St. Louis. Several medals were produced in connection with the 1904 World’s Fair. This is one of the so-called Exhibition Palace Dollars from the Louisiana Purchase Exposition featuring the Cascade Gardens and the Government Building which is listed as HK-316 in the Hibler-Kappen book on So-Called Dollars and has been graded MS66DPL by NGC and is encapsulated in a newer-style edge-view holder. The obverse features a detailed rendition of the Cascade Gardens. The reverse is a detailed rendition of the Government Building with notes that it was 764 feet long and cost $450,000. This piece is bright white and very lustrous. The piece also has strong prooflike mirrored fields with frosty devices. This piece is by far the finest known example of the HK-316 graded by NGC as the only MS66DPL; the next closest specimens are a few MS64DPL examples and a couple of MS64PL pieces. An opportunity to get the finest known example of this so-called dollar. |
