The Pony Express Centennial Official Medals were struck by the U.S. Mint in 1960 for the 100th anniversary of the formation of the Pony Express. This example of the 1960 Pony Express Centennial Official Medal struck in silver is listed as HK-582 in the Hibler-Kappen book on So-Called Dollars and has been graded MS64 by PCGS and is encapsulated in one of the newer-style edge-view holders. While there are higher graded examples available on the market, and I thought this example would have graded higher, this piece has spectacular original toning that dominates. The obverse in particular is completely toned with a mostly blue and purple toning that transitions to a green color near the rim. The reverse is also toned, but the reverse toning is more focused towards the rims with the central design bright, white and lustrous. The color of the piece is more vibrant in and a bit less dark than my photos show. I can find no significant hits or marks that would justify the relatively low grade of the medal. A beautiful example of the silver Pony Express Centennial medal that is much nicer than the grade suggests. |
