The 1947-S MacArthur 50 Centavos is a silver coin minted at the San Francisco Mint for the Philippines who wished to honor General Douglas MacArthur following World War II. This 1947-S Philippines MacArthur 50 Centavos has been graded MS66+ by PCGS and is encapsulated in the newer-style edge-view holder. At the MS66+ grade, the coin ties one other coin as the highest graded example ever graded by PCGS with no examples grading higher. I recently sold the other MS66+ example and that coin is part of a matched toned set with a MacArthur Peso and the coin is not likely to be back on the market for quite awhile. The coin is very lustrous, lightly toned and virtually free of any noticeable marks or hits. Not only is the coin a top pop coin, but the coin also exhibits doubling on the obverse, particularly on the words “DOUGLAS MACARTHUR.” At first look, given the clear doubled die obverse, I believed the coin to be the Allen R-1a DDO variety. However, upon closer inspection, the coin also shows slight doubling on the reverse at the right stars of the shield and on the 7 of the date, indicating the coin is likely the Allen R-1c Doubled Die Obverse & Doubled Die Reverse variety. Please note that the variety has not been attributed by PCGS on the label. A very high-end example of the MacArthur 50 Centavos with the DDO & DDR variety. |
