| This 1860 Woodgate & Co. merchant token featuring The Smoker has been graded MS66BN by PCGS and is encapsulated in one of their newer-style edge-view holders. The token has been attributed as NY-981 as indicated on the PCGS label. This piece is also from the famous John J. Ford Collection as referenced on the label. Merchant tokens featuring the Smoker design are quite scarce and in high demand. This is especially true of high grade example like the present example. This piece is the sole example grading MS66BN at PCGS with none grading finer. The top example graded by NGC to date is an MS64BN example. The obverse, with it’s famous “no pleasure can exceed the smoking of the weed” motto is a problem free even brown color that pops with wonderfully toned medium purple and pink colors under light. The reverse is also free of issues and retains a good deal of red color towards the rim in particular. An amazing top pop finest known example of the “Smoker” with provenance to the Ford Collection. |
