1972 Type 2 Eisenhower Dollar PCGS MS65 CAC March Variety SOLD
1972 Type 2 Eisenhower Dollar PCGS MS65 CAC March Variety
There are three major reverse die varieties of 1972 copper-nickel clad Eisenhower Dollars. The primary pick up point for identifying each variety is the Earth above the eagle. On the Type 2 reverse, Florida is less rounded and more pointy and the island nations to the southeast of Florida are incuse and seem to appears as one large island. The Type 2 reverse variety is the most rare of the three and is considered to be the key date coin of the entire Eisenhower Dollar series. Many have called the 1972 with the Type 2 reverse the King of Ike Dollars. This 1972 Type 2 Eisenhower Dollar has been graded MS65 by PCGS. The coin has also been certified by CAC as being solid for the assigned grade. A TrueView photo was taken by PCGS which captures the beauty of this coin in the best light. The coin has a few light hits, but compared to other MS65 Eisenhower Dollars I have handled, this one is quite nice. The coin is mostly untoned, but has a very faint band of subtle steel blue color near the rims. Because of the interest in this key date, collectors on the Ike Group website have been able to further identify and attribute two sub-varieties of Type 2 reverse, typically called the “March” variety and the “August” variety. This example is the so-called “March” variety which is primarily identified by a small die crack at the top of STATES on the reverse and a very small die gouge in Eisenhower’s hair on the obverse. Only seven (7) examples of this key variety have been graded higher at PCGS, all of which are MS66 coins and all of which would be valued at well over $10,000 each. A very nice gem example of the key date Type 2 1972 Eisenhower Dollar with no significant issues.
