1892 Columbian Expo Bust Dollar HK-236a NGC MS62PL SOLD
1892 Columbian Expo Bust Dollar HK-236a NGC MS62PL
The 1893 World Columbian Exposition held in Chicago to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the voyage of Christopher Columbus to the New World was one of the largest and most popular World’s Fairs in history. Many numismatic items were struck in connection with the Columbian Exposition from the first commemorative coins of the United States to nearly a hundred different so-called dollars. This is one of the so-called Columbus Bust Dollars from the Columbian Exposition listed as HK-236a in the Hibler-Kappen book on So-Called Dollars which has been graded MS62PL by NGC. Please note that the medal is holed at the 12 o’clock position which is often the case on these early medals. The obverse features a depiction of Columbus with a wreath of leaves of berries. The reverse features detailed views of five of the buildings from the exposition in separate panels. The medal has strong prooflike fields on both sides with bright white cartwheel luster. There are several small marks in the fields, particularly the open fields on the obverse, which likely account for the relatively low mint state grade. A nice mint state example of this detailed Columbus Bust Dollar from the Columbian Exposition.
