1933 Santa Monica Breakwater HK-687 Aluminum NGC MS61 |
$150 |
|
Medals of various compositions were struck for the dedication of the Santa Monica Breakwater in 1933. This example of the 1933 Santa Monica Breakwater Medal was struck in aluminum and is listed as HK-687 in the Hibler-Kappen reference on So-Called Dollars. This 1933 Santa Monica Breakwater HK-687 Medal has been graded MS61 by NGC and is encapsulated in a newer-style edge-view holder. The design is one of the more popular designs seen on so-called dollars with the sunbathing female with the amusement park on the obverse and the pier and harbor on the reverse. The piece is a bright white untoned example that shows the details well. The piece does show many small marks on each side in the open fields and those account for the relatively low mint state grade. That said, the piece is semi-prooflike and quite frosty in appearance and has a great overall look despite the relatively low grade. Those more familiar with this issue will note that they often have various numbers on the bottom, though the significance of the numbers seems to have been lost to history; this piece is marked L.A.R.S. CO. at the bottom and does NOT have a number following. A bright white mint state example of this popular so-called dollar lacking the numeral on the bottom. |
