1909 Taft/Diaz Meeting Medal HK-387 NGC MS64BN |

On October 16, 1909, President Taft of the United States and President Diaz of Mexico had a meeting at the Mexico/U.S. border. Medals were produced to commemorate this meeting of Presidents in two major varieties, one with an English reverse and one with a Spanish reverse. This copper version of the 1909 Taft/Diaz Dollar with the English reverse is listed as HK-387 in the Hibler-Kappen reference on So-Called Dollars. This example of the 1909 Taft/Diaz Meeting Medal has been graded MS64BN by NGC and is encapsulated in a newer-style edge-view holder. The piece is a beautiful high grade example with amazing cartwheel luster on both sides. The color is an even deep and dark brown that is surprisingly bright in hand given the strong luster and is free of spotting. The obverse with the high relief portraits of Taft and Diaz is nearly flawless. The reverse with the text shows several marks, most if not all of which appear to be caused by flaws in the dies. The reverse fields also show a couple of areas which seem to indicate die rust and are as struck. An overall excellent high-grade example of this popular so-called dollar. |
