So-Called Petroleum Dollars were distributed at the Petroleum Exhibit at the Golden Gate Exposition held on Treasure Island in San Francisco. The Petroleum Dollars were created to market the importance of the petroleum industry to the United States economy. This example of the 1939 Golden Gate Exposition Petroleum Dollar was struck in gilt-bronze and is listed as HK-484 in the Hibler-Kappen reference on So-Called Dollars. This 1939 HK-484 Medal has been graded MS64 by NGC and is encapsulated in a newer-style edge-view holder. The medal has a bright golden color and has excellent cartwheel luster on both sides. A few light handling marks are present on both sides of the piece, but none are major. A single minor blemish on the left reverse likely keeps this one from grading a point or two higher. A terrific near-gem example of the popular 1939 Petroleum Dollar. |
