128,800 proof Washington Quarters were minted in 1953. A very small percentage of those coins struck exhibit hand engraved tail feathers (designated as FS-901 in the Cherrypicker’s
Guide) which were carved into the dies by a Mint employee to strengthen
the features on a die nearing the end of its life.
The coin offered here, a 1953 Proof Washington Quarter FS-901 Re-Engraved Tail Feathers graded PR65 by PCGS, is an overall nice example of the variety. The coin has wonderful deep mirrors and the reverse of the coin is spectacular. Only a half a dozen or so small toning spots on the obverse keep this coin from a higher grade. The coin has been professionally imaged by PCGS for their CoinFacts service. The coin was also holdered with the reverse of the coin facing forward which adds to the overall presentation of this ultra rare variety.
