| This 1860 M.L. Marshall’s Variety Store merchant token from Oswego, New York has been graded MS65RB by NGC and is encapsulated in one of their newer-style edge-view holders. This is the scarce version of the token struck in copper which is attributed as M-NY-1008 as indicated on the NGC label. This piece is also from the famous John J. Ford Collection although this fact has not been referenced on the label. The spectacular obverse design with the fly fisherman makes this one of the more popular merchant tokens. This example has extraordinary eye appeal with semi-prooflike fields that pop with amazing colorful toning that is mostly purple and pink but also shows areas of blue and green color. Much nicer in hand than photos could possibly show. |
