This 1860 M.L. Marshall’s Variety Store merchant token from Oswego, New York has been graded MS64 by NGC and is encapsulated in one of their newer-style edge-view holders. This is the rare version of the token struck in silver which is attributed as M-NY-1007 as indicated on the NGC label. This piece is also from the famous John J. Ford Collection as referenced on the label. The spectacular obverse design with the fly fisherman makes this one of the more popular merchant tokens. This piece is very well struck and is a wonderful medium silver color that shows some toning under light. This example is tied with a couple of others as the finest known example graded by NGC with no examples grading finer. Please note that the NGC holder does have some fine scratches in the plastic that unfortunately show in the photos. |
