With the outbreak of World War II, nickel was a vital resource for the war effort so much so that the Mint changed the composition of the nickel to 56% copper-35% silver-9% manganese during 1942 and the so-called silver "war nickel" was born. This 1944-D Jefferson War Nickel has been graded MS66 by NGC and is encapsulated in the newer-style edge-view holder. The coin has strong mint luster and attractive toning on both sides. The obverse toning is a subtle blend of various pastel colors while the reverse colors are a bit more vibrant with primarily pink, gold and green colors. A pretty example the silver wartime Jefferson Nickel. |
