The 1893 World Columbian Exposition held in Chicago to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the voyage of Christopher Columbus to the New World was one of the largest and most popular World’s Fairs in history. Many numismatic items were struck in connection with the Columbian Exposition from the first commemorative coins of the United States to nearly a hundred different so-called dollars. This is one of the so-called Exhibition Palace Dollars from the Columbian Exposition featuring the Administration Building which is listed as HK-176 in the Hibler-Kappen book on So-Called Dollars and has been graded MS64PL by NGC. Typically produced in brass or aluminum, it is much less common to find gilt examples of this piece. In fact, gold-plated examples of this medal are not even mentioned in the Hibler-Kappen reference by the gilt finish has been noted on the NGC label. The obverse features a bust of Christopher Columbus and the reverse is a detailed rendition of the Administration Building with notes that it was 260 feet square and cost $450,000. This piece has a bright and lustrous gold color with great luster. There are some minor marks and slight discolorations in the open areas of the prooflike fields. This is one of only two (2) examples of the HK-176 with the PL designation from NGC and the only one I have seen with the gilt finish. A very impressive and rare gilt version of this so-called dollar from the Columbian Exposition. |
