The reverse design features the California State Seal design from the Official Medal of the 1894 California Midwinter Exposition and the 2016 date. The 1894 California Midwinter Exposition medal was designed by Charles Barber and struck by the United States Mint and is a popular so-called dollar listed as HK-245 in the Hibler-Kappen reference.
