In 2009, countries around the World celebrated the International Year of Astronomy which was held to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Galileo’s first recorded observations by telescope. Several mints around the World took part in this celebration by issuing special commemorative coins. One of the most impressive and popular pieces issued was issued by the National Bank of Ukraine. This 2009 Ukraine 100 Hyrvnias One Kilo .999 Silver Year of Astronomy coin is in its original capsule and box and includes the certificate of authenticity. This is an amazing and beautifully done coin. This large coin measures 100 mm in diameter and is a full kilogram of pure .999 silver (32.15 troy ounces). The obverse of the coin features an artistic view of the Sun with the orbiting planets. If you look closely, you will note that the Earth is represented by a 0.2 carat blue topaz which is set into the surface of the coin. The reverse of the coin features an observatory towards the bottom with images of Galileo Galilei, a galaxy and a radio telescope. The coin is free of any noticeable blemishes or toning and the surfaces are pristine as they have been protected in the original capsule. Please note the coin fits somewhat loosely in the capsule such that the inside of the capsule is somewhat scratched up from the coin moving slightly over the years, but the coin itself is not affected.
The certificate of authenticity indicates that this coin is number 108 of a total authorized mintage of up to 700 pieces. Though I was unable to confirm the actual total number minted, given the high issue price of this coin, I would guess than less than 700 were actually issued. A beautiful and impressive low mintage silver kilo.
