The Liberty Head Dollars of 1892 were struck in various sizes and various metallic compositions in celebration of the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago. The silver dollar sized version of the piece struck in aluminum is listed as HK-222 in the Hibler-Kappen reference on So-Called Dollars. The piece is also cataloged as Eglit-51 and Eglit-101. This is the larger 50mm diameter high relief version of the HK-222 aluminum 1892 Liberty Head Dollar which has been graded PF66 Ultra Cameo by NGC and is encapsulated in one of their oversize holders. The piece is attributed on the NGC label as Eglit-101. The obverse features the so-called Liberty Head in very high relief. The reverse depicts the landing of Columbus in the New World. The piece has deep and dark mirrored fields with frosty and bright high relief devices. Just a couple of tiny marks can be found under magnification, but in hand the piece appears to be virtually perfect. Nearly all of the marks and lines you see in the photos are on the holder and not on the medal. A wonderful example of this popular high relief Columbian Exposition medal. |
