Here is an 1879-S Australia Gold Sovereign with the St. George style reverse which has been graded AU50 by PCGS. The 1879-S St. George Sovereign is one of the key dates of the series and is highly demanded. This is a really nice example with a beautiful gold color and some original luster remaining, particularly in the protected areas of the design and near the rims. The fields of the coin are also proof like which adds to the overall eye appeal. The coin exhibits light wear appropriate for the assigned grade along with several small marks and light hits as can be seen in the photos, but nothing distracting. The coin is 91.7% pure gold and has a total actual gold weight of 0.2354 ounces. The Krause Guide (6th Edition) lists a value of this coin in XF at $1650 and in Unc at $5500! Overall, this coin is a terrific almost uncirculated example of this key date which goes up exponentially in price in higher grades.
