Here is an 1836 Lettered Edge Capped Bust Half Dollar which has been graded XF40 by PCGS. The coin has also been certified by CAC as being solid for the assigned grade. I believe this coin is the Overton 104a variety, which is one of the varieties that is considered “scarce” according to the authors who have assigned the O-104a a Rarity rating of R3. One of the main identifiers of the variety is the die crack which loops around much of the reverse from the olive leaves, through UNITED, along the scroll to the upper right wing. Both sides of the coin show beautiful rainbow color which covers a good portion of the coin, but is concentrated more so toward the rims. It was difficult to get the color to show accurately in the images so I have provided a few alternate images, including photos taken under diffused lighting to better highlight the toning. The coin also has nice mint luster on both sides which further adds to the overall eye appeal. An amazingly attractive example of this “scarce” variety 1836 lettered edge half dollar. |
