1921 Pilgrim Half PCGS MS65 SOLD
1921 Pilgrim Half PCGS MS65
The 1921 Pilgrim Tercentenary Commemorative Half Dollars commemorated the 300th anniversary of the landing of the Pilgrims at Plymouth, Massachusetts in 1620. The 1921 examples of this commemorative were the second and final year of this issue and were minted in much lower numbers than the 1920. The obverse features the portrait of William Bradford who was the governor of the Plymouth Colony. The reverse shows a an impressively detailed rendition of the Mayflower. This example of the Pilgrim half dollar has been graded MS65 by PCGS and is encapsulated in one of the newer-style edge-view holders. The coin is moderately toned in a very even golden-grey color on both sides, with traces of other iridescent colors present also. A couple of deep hits just to the right of the hat, and a couple of hits off the nose, likely limited the grade of the piece, but they are not too distracting. When viewing the coin in hand, the viewer’s eye is mostly drawn to the impressive amount of die polish lines covering the obverse fields and the strength of those lines. Faint traces of die clashing can still be found underneath those strong die polish lines. It appears that the coin was struck on very freshly worked dies after a significant die clash. Clashing is very clear on the reverse of the coin, particularly in the upper left sails which show the outline of Bradford’s hand from the obverse, and just off the rear sail where the inverted “RUS” from TRUST on the obverse can be found. A very interesting looking gem Pilgrim half dollar that is certainly not your average looking example.
