1879-S Morgan Dollar PCGS Regency Sample Slab Byron Reed Collection SOLD
1879-S Morgan Dollar PCGS Regency Sample Slab Byron Reed Collection
The PCGS Regency Holder

The PCGS Regency Holder is one of the most rare versions of the PCGS holder. For a short time in the early 1990s, PCGS had an optional premium holder available for a significant extra cost. This premium slab, known as the Regency slab, was large and green with a larger label as well. This larger label allowed for the addition of a couple of lines of text which were customizable by the submitter. This large Regency slab ultimately proved to be quite unpopular at the time given the added cost and the large size of the holder which did not match other PCGS slabs and did not fit in any of the PCGS slab boxes. PCGS estimates that less than 700 of these special holders were ever produced, more than half of which were Israeli coins holdered by the Danny Kaye Estate. This 1958 Israel 5 Lirot has been graded MS66 by PCGS and is encapsulated in their special Regency holder. This coin is one of those that is attributed to the Danny Kay Estate and is numbered “Speciman Coin #80/363.” The coin is bright white and very lustrous and the Regency holder itself is in excellent condition. The Byron Reed Collection

Byron Reed (1829-1891) was a collector of many things including, books, autographs and coins. Reed’s coin collection is known today as one of the greatest collections assembled during the 19th Century and had many great rarities including an 1804 Dollar. Upon his death in 1891, Reed donated his entire collection to the City of Omaha, Nebraska. Today, much of the Byron Reed Collection remains housed in the Durham Museum in Omaha.

The PCGS Regency Sample Slab!

This 1879-S Morgan Dollar had been encapsulated by PCGS in their special Regency holder. No grade or certification number has been assigned to this coin and instead the label says “SAMPLE.” The label also references the “Byron Reed Collection” in “Omaha, Nebraska.” Up until the discovery of this coin, no examples of a PCGS Regency Sample Slab have been known to collectors. Additionally, no mention of a PCGS Regency Sample was made in the Schwager reference on sample slabs. This piece was discovered at the 2016 ANA World’s Fair of Money in Anaheim where it was displayed and where it received significant interest and many offers. Given the date and apparent low mint state condition of the silver dollar in the holder, the coin may not be from the Byron Reed Collection. Instead, this holder may have been produced in an effort to entice the Byron Reed Collection to encapsulate their coins in these PCGS Regency holders. That did not ultimately happen and many of the great coins in the Byron Reed Collection, including the 1804 Silver Dollar, are in ICG holders today. A rare and special opportunity to add an amazing sample slab to your collection; an opportunity that will most likely not come around again any time soon, or perhaps ever.
