1877-S Trade Dollar "Potty Dollar" Carving |

Here is an interesting piece which is commonly called a “Potty Dollar.” These carved coins are typically made from Seated Liberty coinage or Trade Dollars and the seated figure of Liberty is usually transformed into a nude figure. Some of the carvings are quite simple and/or crude, while others are highly detailed and beautiful. Some collectors consider Potty Dollars to be a precursor of the Hobo Nickel carvings which came about years later. The example here is one of the better contemporary Potty Dollars I have come across as it exhibits nice original detail and great eye appeal. The host coin of this Potty Dollar is an 1877-S Trade Dollar. The carving on the obverse appears to have been done very long ago and there is considerable detail in the carving and is very well done. The darker and more dirty looking fields of the coin with the lighter devices give the coin a very eye appealing circulated cameo effect. A very well-made example of the popular “Potty Dollar.” |
