The San Diego Commemorative Half Dollar was issued in connection with the California Pacific International Exposition. The coins dated 1935 were struck in San Francisco while the coins dated 1936 were struck in Denver. This coin here is a 1936-D San Diego Half Dollar graded MS65 by NGC and is housed in an old thick holder which is often called a "fatty" holder. This coin also features a Quadrupled Die Obverse, most evident on the word LIBERTY and has a strong Repunched Mintmark D/D on the reverse. A close up image of the repunched mintmark is included. This variety is designated as FS-101 in the most recent Cherrypicker's Guide and while the variety on this coin has not been attributed by NGC, it is a clear match to the description and photos in that reference. The coin has really nice bright white lustrous surfaces on both sides and relatively few marks or issues for the assigned grade. The obverse image of the seated female with the shield and the bear in the background has only a few tiny marks on the high points. The reverse image of the exposition’s observation tower also shows just a couple of tiny marks on the high points but the fields are almost mark free. Overall the coin is a very nice bright white gem example of this classic commemorative variety. |
