1861-65 Aaron White Satirical Dollar HK-829 NGC MS64BN |

Aaron White was an eccentric lawyer who believed in hoarding silver and gold coinage versus paper money. To help spread his belief that paper money was worthless, White struck the so-called Aaron White Satirical Dollars mostly likely during the Civil War. This popular piece has a very interesting design with the obverse featuring a pig hanging from a hook and the reverse featuring a pig rooting in a bag of money. The message on the piece is to “Never Keep a Paper Dollar In Your Pocket Till Tomorrow.” This example of the Aaron White Satirical Dollar struck in copper is listed as HK-829 in the Hibler-Kappen book on So-Called Dollars and has been graded MS64BN by NGC and is encapsulated in one of the newer-style edge-view holders. The piece is deeply toned on both sides with very attractive colors; primarily blue, purple and pink colors, with a little bit of brighter orange and red in some of the protected areas. The fields are slightly prooflike as well which adds to the eye appeal of the piece. The eye appeal is not fully captured in the photos provided and certainly looks better in hand. The only issue of note is a minor rim bump that may have prevented a higher grade as the piece has no major marks or other issues. This is one of only five (5) examples of the HK-829 so-called dollar graded by NGC in the MS64BN graded with no examples grading finer in this color designation. Two (2) MS64RB pieces and a single MS65RB piece are known. A very high grade and colorfully toned example of this interesting and popular so-called dollar. |
